Tualatin Hills’ 13-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars won the District Title without a loss, battling past the Salem Steelheads 19-16 in the tournament finale on July 18 at Volcanoes Stadium in Keizer.
It was a nailbiter too, with T-Hills down by 12 runs in the third inning when John Waczak smashed a hit to the fence to jumpstart a seven-run inning. Rob Valentine took the mound in the fourth inning and allowed just one more run the rest of the game.
In the sixth, Valentine doubled to the fence to drive in three more runs for the final 19-16 margin. The game ended with Valentine on the mound and a smash to center field caught by T-Hills’ Juan Molina.
T-Hills beat out teams from Clatskanie/Rainer, Southeast Portland and the Salem Steelheads in its tournament win. Pitcher Parker Stidham threw the win against Clatskanie/Rainier in game one, then allowed just one hit against Salem in game three.
Sam Rzepecki flew in from Wisconsin to pitch the win for T-Hills in game two, picking up the win after missing a connecting flight and not arriving home until 1:30 a.m. on the day of the game.
