PORTLAND – Timely home runs.
Great pitching.
The 10-11 Murrayhill all-stars used that and more to defeat Bend North 8-5 and win the 10-11 state championship July 15 at Alpenrose Dairy.
Murrayhills’ Huntley Sims pitched a gutsy game, striking batters out with runners in scoring position and letting his defense do the heavy lifting.
“I was really nervous but I was pumped to pitch and was glad to get the win,” Sims said.
Sims not only pitched a great game, but was solid at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a towering home run in the second inning.
“He was just clutch. For a kid to concentrate the whole game on not just pitching but hitting also was great,” manager Jesse Leyva said.
Sims was given an early lead when shortstop Karac Leyva hit a first-inning solo home run over the left field wall off Bend North pitcher Walker Foley.
“Our coaches told us he was throwing strikes. The second pitch was right down the middle so I made contact and it jumped,” Karac Leyva said.
