PORTLAND – There were no letdowns for the Murrayhill Majors all-star baseball team on Tuesday night.

Facing Tigard in the District 4 championship at Alpenrose Dairy, Murrayhill allowed no letdowns, took no missteps, and made very few mistakes in an 11-1 four-inning victory that gave Murrayhill its ninth straight District 4 title and a berth in the upcoming state tournament.

Murrayhill opens play at state with a game against the District 2 champion at noon Saturday at Salem’s Holland Youth Park. Murrayhill will continue in pool play with games at 2 p.m. Sunday (vs. Medford American), 8 p.m. Monday (vs. St. Helens) and 8 p.m. Wednesday (vs. Pendleton). State tournament semifinals are set for 7 p.m. July 29 and the championship for 7 p.m. July 30.

“You’ve just got to go in there and play like we played today,” said Murrayhill third baseman Sam Greenwood, who went 3 for 3 against Tigard with three RBIs and two runs scored. “If we play like we played today, we should do really well. We could go far.”

“We’re good all around. I think we’re a lot more confident this year,” added pitcher Andrew Carter, who shut down Tigard on three hits and two walks while striking out nine. “I think our team’s pretty confident but we’ve still got to work hard.”

Despite his team’s dominating performance at district — Murrayhill won six straight games by an average margin of 11-3 — Murrayhill manager Craig Nelsen was in no way ready to name his team a favorite for the coming state tournament.

“This team, for the most part has been together for three runs at state and we haven’t gotten it done,” Nelsen said. “The first year, we didn’t win any games. Last year, we went 2-2. This year, we’re going to be in a very tough bracket. It’s going to be tough.”
