BEAVERTON – It ain’t easy matching up against the Jesuit girls swim team.

The Crusaders are defending Metro League and Class 6A state champions and a team determined to repeat both those feats in 2010. Jesuit showed as much last week when it raced past Beaverton 119-51 at Beaverton Swim Center on Jan. 28 to improve to 4-0 in Metro League competition.

“It’s really important to try your hardest at every meet so you know exactly where you are going into district,” said Jesuit’s Megan McCarroll, winner of the 100-yard backstroke and a member of three winning Jesuit relay teams. “No matter who you’re racing, you give it all you’ve got.”

McCarroll was one of seven Jesuit individual winners against Beaverton, taking the backstroke with a time of 58.44 seconds (with teammate Chelsea Garza second at 1:06.50).

“I was pretty happy,” McCarroll said of her backstroke. “Everything’s been coming up really fast and I’m really excited because we have the big meets coming up that I’ve been training for since Christmas.”

Other individual winners for the Crusaders were Sheila Stocks in the 200 individual medley at 2:19.39, Kelsey Forester in the 50 freestyle at 26.55, Kori Carpenter in the 100 butterfly at 1:02.08, Alyssa Hudson in the 500 freestyle at 5:42.49 and Blaise Wittenauer-Lee in the 100 breaststroke at 1:13.37.

Jesuit was dominant in the relays too, going 1-2 in each of the three races. McCarroll and Stocks swam on all three winners, teaming with Katie King and Taylor Scroggy to take the 200 medley at 1:51.70, with Acacia Briggs and Scroggy in the 200 freestyle at 1:44.70, and with Gabriella Nanson and Sarah Atkins to top the 400 freestyle at 3:48.30.

All that success has McCarroll and her teammates ready for the big meets ahead — today’s (Thursday’s) 4 p.m. meet against Southridge for the Metro title, the Feb. 12-13 Metro District meet and the Feb. 19-20 Class 6A state meet.
