BEAVERTON – The Jesuit and Beaverton boys swim teams may be at opposite ends of the Metro League standings, but despite that, they went after each other with the exact same zeal and intensity last week.
The Crusaders walked away with the day’s big prize, taking top honors in the meet with a 135-34 victory at Beaverton Swim Center on Jan. 28. They built their win right from the get-go and did so by winning 10 of the meet’s 11 events and running their Metro League record to 3-1 in the process.
The win also sets up a chance for the Crusaders to win a share of the Metro title — they face league-leading Southridge (4-0) in the final meet of the regular season at 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at Beaverton Swim Center.
Jesuit got two wins each against the Beavers from Byron Held and Thomas Geulin and additional individual victories from Alex Johnson, Jonathan Barnard and Nathan Holt, not to mention sweeping the day’s three relays.
After his victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, Holt said that — while his winning time of 1 minute, 6.38 seconds was not a personal best — he felt that faster times were on their way.
“I think I’ll drop a lot of time when I taper because I’m at peak training right now,” Holt said. “But coming close to hitting best times at times like this is pretty good.”
Still, Holt knows he has his work cut out for him at the Feb. 12-13 Metro League District Meet.
“I’m hoping to go 1:03 at district,” Holt said. “But Cole Hurwitz at Sunset is really good — if he swims (the breaststroke), he’ll likely win. And Jonathan Yuan at Westview is real fast and Kasey Kwong from Sunset is good too.”
