BEAVERTON – Offense wins ratings. Defense wins championships.
If so, the Jesuit football team will have plenty of both in the remaining weeks of the 2009 high school season.
The second-ranked Metro League-champion Crusaders (11-1) pitched a shutout against No. 4 PIL champ Grant (10-2) in Friday, got touchdowns from four different players and rolled to a 33-0 win at Jesuit High School in the Class 6A state quarterfinals.
"They had a lot of speed but we knew could match it," said Jesuit senior Jordan Lewis, who had a second-quarter interception that set up his team's second touchdown. "After adjustments, we were able to stop it and we went from there."
"We don’t care who makes the big play," said senior lineman Kenny Ulrich, who picked off a Grant pass and returned it 30 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter. "We all do our assignments, make sure everybody has their man, do what we're supposed to do and play as a team."
That team effort helped hold explosive Grant to just 162 yards in total offense and limited senior star Kenneth Acker – who was slowed by an ankle injury in the first quarter – to just 13 total yards.
"I was disappointed in the effort we played with," said Grant junior running back Trevionte Riley, who led his team with 43 yards rushing on 13 carries. "But you've got to give credit to Jesuit. They're a great team. I thought we were ready, but we knew we'd have to play really well."
