ROCK CREEK – The stakes could not have been higher.
The challenge could not have been greater.
The outcome could not have been more dramatic. And Southridge's football team could not have been happier.
The Skyhawks beat Westview 19-13 in overtime on Friday night at Westview High School in both team's Metro League finales, and in doing so, earned a Class 6A state playoff berth and the Metro's second seed to state. The Skyhawks (3-2 in Metro play, 5-4 overall) will host Clackamas (5-4 overall), the fourth seed from the Three Rivers League, on Friday night.
"It’s an amazing feeling. I couldn’t be more proud of my team right now," said Southridge senior running back Willie Lowe, who rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, including the 1-yard game winner at the end of overtime.
"We all came together at the end, fought it out and it turned out good," said Southridge senior Taylor Goodling, who ended Westview's overtime possession with a fourth-down interception. "We all came together at the end because we knew our season was on the line."
And indeed, Southridge's season was on the line, especially after it was announced that Aloha had beaten Beaverton in the other contest featuring the Metro League's four 2-2 teams on Friday night. With the Warriors' win secure while Southridge and Westview were still on the field, the Skyhawks knew that, without a victory, their playoff hopes would have ended.
