BEAVERTON – It’s been a long time — a long, long time — since a Jesuit football team started a season 0-2.
And the Crusaders (1-1) were determined not to let that happen this year. They succeeded in that aim Friday, but it wasn’t easy, rallying from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 28-21 over Clackamas (1-1) at Jesuit High School.
“It was way too exciting,” admitted Jesuit coach Ken Potter. “I loved the outcome but I could do with us not messing up an onside kick, not fumbling the ball away and not having so many penalties.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Jesuit broke onto the scoreboard first when fullback Taylor Martinek hauled in a 7-yard scoring strike from quarterback Jeff Elorriaga (15-of-21 passing for 182 yards, two TDs and no interceptions) and Ryan Cope added the extra point to make it 7-0.
The Crusaders, who had just three possessions in the first half, scored again in their next series, getting a 1-yard run from Keanon Lowe to boost its edge to 13-0.
But the Cavaliers, who opened the season with a 21-2 victory over Redwoods, Calif., rallied with three unanswered touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Quarterback David Sowards collected the first of those on a 2-yard run in the third quarter set up by a recovered onside kick, and teammate Tanner Johns put his team in front 14-13 after he broke up a Jesuit lateral, scooped up the ball and raced 20 yards to score.
