BEAVERTON – There’s just not much that the Jesuit’s boys track team is not good at.
The Crusaders proved that in spades last week against talented Southridge, winning 11 of the day’s 17 events and racing away with a 91½-53½ win at Southridge High School. The victory lifted Jesuit’s Metro League record to 4-0 and kept it in a first-place tie with similarly unbeaten Sunset while the Skyhawks fell to 2-2 and third in the Metro.
“We knew this meet was going to be tough,” said Jesuit senior Patrick Maag, who won both the 800 and 1,500 meters against Southridge. “We knew we’d have to bring our ‘A’ game to get through this one.”
And the Crusaders’ ‘A’ game was indeed in evidence against Southridge. In addition to its 11 wins, Jesuit also placed second nine times and third 12 times to pull away for the win.
In addition to Maag’s double, Jesuit senior Mitch Fry won twice for the Crusaders, taking the 100 meters in 11.11 seconds (he tied Southridge’s AJ Riley for top honors in the 100, Riley also crossing in 11.11) and the 200 at 22.69.
Maag did his damage in the middle distances, first winning the 1,500 with a time of 4:07.04, then coming back later in the 800 to emerge victorious in a duel with Southridge’s Cesar James-Perez and John Panaccione, Maag finishing at 1:59.33 with James-Perez second at 1:59.48 and Panaccione third at 2:00.00.
“We knew (Panaccione) was ready for a breakout race and we know Cesar’s got a lot of potential,” Maag said of the 800 showdown. “I just tried to hold them off on the last part. They got a little too far ahead, but I rallied back on the back part.”
