BEAVERTON – Apparently, you can't stop the Beaverton football team. You can only hope to contain them.
And thanks to senior quarterback Michael DeHaan, his top-flight offensive line and a talented group of receivers, even that is highly unlikely.
Roseburg took its best shot at stopping the Beavers Friday night, but like the two opponents that preceded them, the Indians fell short, dropping a 38-34 thriller at Beaverton High School. The win lifted Beaverton's non-league record to 3-0 while Roseburg fell to 0-3.
"It’s just going good," said DeHaan, who completed 22-of-32 passes for 434 yards (his second straight 400-yard passing game) and four touchdowns. It "was back and forth. We were up by four, down by three, up by four, down by three. But I knew our offense wasn’t going to stop."
DeHaan "had a great game and our receivers did too, but the offensive line doesn’t get enough credit," added Beaverton coach Bob Boyer, complimenting starters Conor Hefeneider, Alex Phompat, AB McElfish, Tyler Holmer and Killian Fitzpatrick. "Those five guys did awesome."
The Indians led by as much as 10-3 midway through the second quarter but couldn't hold their advantage. Roseburg scored touchdowns three different times in the second half and took three-point leads over the Beavers each time, the last of those at 34-31 when Dakota Cavens hauled in a 20-yard TD pass from Thaddeus Davis with 5 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
