ROCK CREEK – Aloha started its Metro League football opener with a bang. Westview finished it by lowering the boom.

The second-ranked Wildcats put aside a challenge from the Warriors with a late burst for a 32-12 victory in a battle between unbeatens on Friday at Westview High School. Aloha hung close before Wildcats’ tight end Tyler Carey caught touchdown passes of 56 and 16 yards in a span of 1 minute, 43 seconds midway through the fourth quarter and late miscues sealed the Warriors’ fate.

For the second straight year, both teams entered the league opener 4-0 – and the Wildcats left undefeated.

“We were fired up,” Westview linebacker Jordan Tuia said. “It was 14-13 last year. We knew it would be a good game after that. We were pumped but they came to play too.”

And the Warriors did from the onset, getting a 55-yard run from Ben Shelton on their first play from scrimmage. Shelton followed with a dive over the pylon for a 6-yard touchdown and quick 6-0 Aloha lead.

But Westview’s defense didn’t allow much room for mistake from that point on and its offense finally followed suit midway through the second quarter. Kaale Papas ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 5:47 left in the first half then added a 2-yard TD run five minutes later after an interception ended Aloha’s possession.

Leading 12-6 at halftime, the Wildcats came out with an 11-play, 66-yard drive that established control and took nearly six minutes off the clock. Papas, who ran for 91 yards on 20 carries, capped it with his third touchdown, punching it in on fourth-and-inches from the goal line.

Backup running back David Aguilar did most of the damage in the tone-setting possession to start the second half. Using split backs, the Wildcats faked to Papas one direction and Aguilar, who didn’t have a carry in the first half, took the handoff the other.
