BEAVERTON – It was a day of firsts on Saturday at Valley Catholic High School.
The Valiant football team celebrated the first home game of its new football program’s first season, scored a touchdown on its first drive and took the lead in a game for the first time in school history.
Unfortunately, the “first” that mattered most for the Valiants – the team’s first win – remained elusive. Visiting Scio (2-1) rushed for 446 yards in the game, scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter and two more in the third to pull away for a 56-7 win over Valley Catholic (0-4).
After the game, the Valiants acknowledged their need to improve on the field while simultaneously enjoying the experience of their first home game.
“It was really a lot of fun playing for the first time at Valley Catholic,” said senior tight end/defensive end Chris Kiefer, who finished with eight catches for 85 yards and his team’s lone touchdown. “It seemed like we had it for a second, but then it just slipped away. We just got discouraged ... because we couldn’t keep playing in the second half.”
“It was really cool to see everyone here supporting the team,” said senior defensive back Leo Yamaguchi, who led his team in tackles Saturday. “I just wish it would have been a little more decent score.”
Still, there were some notable highlights, with the Valiants’ opening drive at the top of the list. After starting at their own 41-yard line following the opening kickoff, the Valiants drove 59 yards in 12 plays to notch the go-ahead touchdown.
Along the way, senior quarterback Kevin Bretthauer completed 4-of-6 passes for 54 yards, including a 13-yard fourth-down conversion to Kiefer to extend the drive, and then, a 15-yard scoring strike to Kiefer in the left corner of the end zone for the touchdown with 6 minutes, 11 seconds left in the first quarter.
