BEAVERTON – There wasn't much more Beaverton's football team could have asked for on Friday.

The Beavers beat fifth-ranked Canby 21-6 at Beaverton High School, improved to 3-1, exorcised the ghosts of their 2006 state playoff loss and closed out their non-league schedule with a whole lot of momentum.

"It feels really good," said senior tight end James Testa, who finished with four catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns against Canby. "We just found it. We clicked finally. We just came out and played a really good second half. That's what we wanted to do."

"We're just rolling right now," added junior quarterback Michael DeHaan, who completed 11-of-17 passes for 181 yards and three TDs. "We just went out and scored on that first drive (of the second half) and we knew we could keep on rolling on them."

To be truthful, it took the Beavers (3-1) a while to get rolling against the Cougars (3-1), who were led by quarterback Jake Fowler's 52 yards rushing and 63 yards passing.

The two teams combined for just nine first downs in the first half and neither team scored until DeHaan hit Testa on a throwback to the left flat and Testa raced 55 yards to give his team a 7-0 lead with 48 seconds remaining in the first half.

DeHaan connected with senior wide receiver Joel Gross for a 6-yard TD on his team's opening drive of the third quarter to make it 14-0, and though Canby answered with a 30-yard Fowler-to-T.J. Gorman scoring pass on their ensuing possession, the Cougars would get no closer.

Canby would get just one more first down before its final fourth-quarter series, and Beaverton added an insurance score when Testa made a diving catch of a 16-yard DeHaan throw in the left corner of the end zone for the final 21-6 margin.
