BEAVERTON - Southridge went to the well once too often, rolled the dice one too many times and came up four points short in its Friday night non-league home game against Lake Oswego.

Southridge (1-1) led the Lakers 10-7 midway through the second quarter after a 30-yard Trevor Harman field goal and a 25-yard Andrew Keller scoring run, but the Laker defense buckled down after that and paved the way for its 21-17 road win.

"They just got it done and we didn't," said Southridge running back/linebacker Andrew Keller, who finished with 40 yards rushing and scored his team's first touchdown. "But I think this is going to help us a lot. We'll get it figured out. We'll get it done."

It was Lake Oswego, however, that got it done Friday night. The Lakers (2-0) answered Southridge's fast start with a 7-yard Jack Lomax-to-Jay Matthews scoring strike with 36 seconds left in the first half, then scored the game-winner just 1:39 later.

The Skyhawks, after being stymied on their first possession of the second half, saw their long snapper launch the ball over punter Mike Draper's head at the 32-yard line, and the Lakers took over from there at the 2-yard line.

Laker tailback Zach Young, who finished with 131 yards and two TDs on 25 carries, cashed in on the next play to provide the Lakers' last score. Young also scored his team's first TD on a 14-yard run in the second quarter.

"We both played well. We just ran out of time," said Southridge tailback Kirk Werhane, who finished with 66 yards on 17 carries.

The Skyhawks drove into LO territory four times in the second half, but wouldn't score again until Harman, the team's backup quarterback, connected with Mitch Mathews for a 20-yard scoring pass with just 24 seconds remaining.
