Last monkey captured after bolting from primate center cage

UPDATE • All nine male macaque are rounded up near Beaverton-area campus

ADVERTISEMENTS

The last escaped monkey was captured and returned to its cage Sunday afternoon after two days on the loose in Washington County.

The nine juvenile, male Japanese macaque monkeys escaped Friday afternoon from their cage at Oregon Health and Science University’s National Primate Research Center near Beaverton. The last one was captured at about 2 p.m.

OHSU reported at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, that a group of nine monkeys escaped from their cage at the primate center during the afternoon and were spotted on the campus perimeter.

By late afternoon, the animals’ caretakers saw the monkeys on the southern edge of the west campus near Southwest 185th Avenue, near TriMet’s westside light-rail station.

OHSU said the animals got out of their cage during daily cleaning. The macaque were part of the center’s breeding colony.

University officials don’t think the animals are dangerous. They ask that anyone who sees the monkeys to keep their distance and call OHSU public safety, 503-494-7744.

Re: Monkeys on the run after bolting from primate center cage

I used to work there and this happened about once a year. It was in the "70s and there was not as many people around. It was kind of amusing to chase monkeys around Washington county! The monkeys there will not harm anyone. Just give them an apple and call the Primate Center.

I feel sorry for those monkeys either way. Beaverton isn't a great monkey habitat, but they don't deserve a lifetime of medical testing either.

I thought that guy sitting next to me on the MAX was a little short and hairy. Run monkeys, run!

If they can make it to Portland City Hall, they could probably find employment and start a new life. I wish them luck.

do you guys have any idea what they infect these monkeys with??? do a little research before "reporting", some of these monkeys are infected with diseases that are 99 percent fatal to humans, and other fatal diseases like hepatitis and AIDS.

why no mention of that PT?

Re: Last monkey captured after bolting from primate center cage

Sorry, it sounds like i was saying the escaped monkeys were infected, i should have said, some of the monkeys at the OHSU primate research center are intentionally infected with these diseases. it is the whole point of the facility. And you're right, the ones that got out, this time, most likely were not infected.

my point was to bring up the issue of unskilled and under payed "assistants" that work out there are putting the community at risk.

they are supposed to be covered from head to toe in protective gear while being within close range of all the primates out there, because there is such a risk.

BTW, that one they're doing testing on that's 99 percent fatal to humans, is passed through saliva.

and goodnight.
