A convicted sex offender police had been searching for turned himself in to Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies last night.

Howard Gail Gutendorf, 47, faces charges of first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree attempted sexual abuse. He is accused of molesting a friend's daughter in Wilsonville.

Gutendorf was convicted in 1992 of a sex offense in Jackson County. He is awaiting trial in Clark County, Wash., for molestation charges, but is on pretrial release, according to the sheriff's office. He turned himself in at 8:25 p.m. on Friday night at the Clackamas County Jail, according to the CCSO.

Gutendorf's registered address with the sheriff's office is in the 10200 block of Southwest Crestwood Court in Beaverton, but when Beaverton police officers and sheriff's deputies went to the house with an arrest warrant, they were refused entry.

"I actually believe he's at that residence in Beaverton," said Clackamas County sheriff‘s Det. Jeffrey Green said yesterday during the search for Gutendorf. "The house he's at is the one he's registered to as a sex offender, so if he's not there and it's been 10 days since he's been there, he's in violation."

Green said he last spoke with Gutendorf in November while investigating the case, and Gutendorf was cooperative then.

He said once Gutendorf is found, the two counties will have to decide whether he is extradited to Washington or if he will face charges in Clackamas County.
