Following a Saturday night attack at the Gresham Central Transit Center, TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen has ordered additional security on the region’s transit system.
Hansen said the regional transit agency will convene a safety summit for the light-rail system, and work with the jurisdictions served by MAX, which stretches from Gresham to Hillsboro and north to the Portland Expo Center.
The goal of the summit would be to coordinate security efforts and ensure that all jurisdictions used limited resources for the most benefit, Hansen said.
“I am directing these changes in order to increase the oversight of our transit system and improve the quality of service to all of our riders,” Hansen said. “I want everyone who rides TriMet or would like to ride TriMet to feel safe, secure and that they can call upon any TriMet employee for help or to answer a question.”
TriMet’s announcement comes two days after a 71-year-old Sandy man was badly beaten by a 15-year-old boy at the Gresham Central Station on Northeast Eighth Avenue.
