The city has tossed down the gauntlet.
It is challenging Beaverton residents and businesses to go “green” by purchasing more environmentally friendly electrical power.
“We’re encouraging our citizens to embrace the idea by helping to set an example,” said Mayor Rob Drake.
The Beaverton City Council voted Monday night to adopt the 2007-08 budget, which includes purchasing 100 percent renewable green power for the first time for all city facilities, including City Hall, the Beaverton City Library, public works building, pumping stations and other water facilities.
The city plans to buy nearly 7.6 million kilowatt hours of renewable power this year from Portland General Electric – enough power to offset about 6.8 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions in one year.
The move will cost an estimated $6,000 a month.
“The city of Beaverton is very committed to sustainable business practices,” Drake said.
