A mass is planned Saturday morning at Jesuit High School for a 25-year-old soldier killed last week in Iraq.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. in the Knight Center for Sgt. Sean Patrick Fennerty of Portland, pictured below, who graduated from Jesuit in 1999.

Fennerty died while conducting combat operations against insurgent forces in the Al Anbar Province. He was a passenger in a military vehicle that was struck by a roadside bomb Saturday.

Fennerty was an Airborne Soldier stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska, with the 25th Infantry Division.

Fennerty was born Feb. 2, 1981, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego. Fennerty’s father, Brian, was on active duty at that time.

Sean Fennerty attended Fruchtendler Elementary School and St. Cyril’s School in Tucson. He graduated from Oregon State University in 2004 with a degree in history.

A statement from Jesuit High School said Fennerty was “a faith-filled person who participated in all areas of the school.”

Jesuit spokesman Andy VanPelt said the school learned of Fennerty’s death Sunday evening.
