Online chat with 'girl' leads to federal charge

The FBI’s Innocent Images Task Force and the Beaverton Police Department arrested a 30-year-old Beaverton man late Wednesday afternoon, about an hour after he made sexually suggestive statements to what he thought was a 14-year-old girl.

Jose Antonio Martinez appeared in U.S. District Court Thursday on a charge of using interstate commerce to entice or attempt to entice a minor for sex.

Martinez was online at about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday talking with what he thought was a young girl, using the Yahoo! Screen name “ontop503.”

The chat ended at about 2:20 p.m.

The teenager was actually an undercover Beaverton police detective working on the FBI task force who had been contacted by Martinez through an Internet chat room.

The charges arose in connection with the Innocent Images National Initiative. Innocent Images is an investigative program designed to crack down on people who traffic in child pornography and those who prey on children online.

The Portland FBI's Innocent Images Task Force includes representatives from the Beaverton Police Department.
